State Rep. Abdullah Hammoud (D-Dearborn) introduced House Bill 4122, which would create the Accessible and Affordable Water Act to guarantee all individuals in Michigan the right to safe, clean, affordable, and accessible water. The legislation requires all state departments and agencies to revise, adopt, or establish policies, regulations, and water affordability criteria to ensure the right of all Michigan residents to have access to affordable, clean water.
“This bill establishes a standard to which we should aspire, and it sets the foundation for future legislative efforts to promote clean and affordable water in Michigan,” said Hammoud. “Clean water is one of the basic necessities for any healthy community, and it absolutely must be accessible and affordable to our state’s residents. After the water crises we’ve faced around the state, I’m proud to have developed this bill over the past few years because I recognize it is vital we all work together and do our part to establish and enforce standards that protect critical access to clean, affordable water.”
Hammoud previously introduced this legislation in 2017, but the bill – HB 4391 of 2017 – stalled in the House Local Government Committee.
